75 Out Of 717 Tablighi Jamaatis From Indonesia Tested Positive For COVID-19 In India: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi

According to the country’s foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, the number of Indonesian nationals who tested positive for COVID-19 in India has risen to 75, Benar News reported.

Marsudi also said that 717 Indonesians had traveled to India to take part in a religious congregation organized by the international Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat, Retno said.

“Indonesia continues to communicate with the Indian government regarding the handling of Indonesian Tablighi Jamaat members in India,” Retno was quoted as saying to the media.

Retno also added that attempts to bring the Indonesians home had been hampered by the ongoing lockdown that has been in force in India since March 24.

On Monday(Apr 20), at least 10 Indonesian nationals, who were caught hiding in a Dhanbad mosque on return from Delhi's Tablighi Jamaat congregation last month, were sent to jail after they completed the mandatory 14 days of quarantine.

Jharkhand police produced them in the court after they ended the isolation period and tested negative for COVID-19. They were charged with violation of the Foreign Visa Act and Disaster Management Act, 2005.

On Apr 15, Bihar police arrested 10 Indonesia and one Malaysian from a location nea Khanka Mosque in Kishanganj district. Another seven Indonesian and four Malaysian were arrested from Naya Bhojpur in Buxar district. They were arrested after their quarantine period for violating tourist visa rules and participating in religious activities

On Apr 12, four Indonesian couples have been remanded in judicial custody in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district after they were arrested for indulging in religious propagation despite coming to India on a visitor’s visa. Ramanathapuram judicial magistrate remanded then to custody after the Indonesian couples, belonging to the Tablighi Jamaat, were produced before him by police.

On Apr 8, 20 Indonesians and nine more Kyrgyzstani Tablighis were booked in Karnataka for allegedly violating visa rules and involving in religious activity without legal permission. Bengaluru police said that they were booked under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act for violating visa rules and over staying to carry out religious activities,

10 more Indonesian Tablighis were booked at Belagavi in Karnataka. The Indonesians were quarantined at a mosque in the city though they tested negative for coronavirus on return from the Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation held in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area last month,

Indonesian envoy in New Delhi, together with the Indonesian Embassy’s task force for COVID-19, has been meeeting with the Indonesian tabligh participants in New Delhi on Tuesday to give moral support. They also called on Indonesian Tablighis to obey the call from authorities in India.

Indonesian missions in New Delhi and Mumbai has been helping the Indonesian citizens, especially the tabligh participants, process their permit extensions with Indian immigration if their visa is close to expiring.
