After Parrikar Wins Floor Test, Top Congress Leader Resigns From The Party

BySwarajya Staff

Manohar Parrikar, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Goa yesterday, has proved himself yet again, winning the floor test with the support of 22 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

Sixteen MLAs opposed Parikar’s candidature, while top Congress leader Vishvajit Rane abstained, at the special assembly session that was convened for the purpose of the floor test. Rane told the media that the reason for abstaining was to show his protest against the leadership of the Congress party. He has also decided to quit the party saying that Congress has betrayed the trust of people of Goa.

Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha had appointed the former union defence minister as the new Chief Minister of the state on sunday and asked him to prove majority on the floor of the Goa legislative assembly "within 15 days after administration of oath of office."

Parrikar took the oath as the Chief Minister for the fourth time on tuesday evening. But the Congress’ challenge of his appointment had the Supreme Court ordering the floor test. The Bharatiya Janata Party which had finished second with 13 seats has thus proved its strength with a total of 22 MLAs on its side, two more than the halfway mark of the 40- member assembly.
