All members of the 12-person Islamist group, including a former imam, that perpetrated attacks in Barcelona and other parts of Spain, are either dead or have been arrested, the country’s police has said, according to Fox News. While four suspects are known to have been detained, eight have been killed.
Driver of the van that ploughed into crowds last week in Barcelona, identified as Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan national, was shot and killed on Monday. He fled the scene of Thursday's attack on foot and hijacked a car to escape.
Five other members of the terror group, who were wearing fake bomb belts and were planing an attack in seaside town of Cambrils were killed by police early on Friday, hours after the deadly attack in Barcelona. The five had rammed a car into pedestrians in the town, killing a woman.
Two members are believed to have died in an accidental explosion in a house being used by suspects as a bomb factory, around 100 miles of Barcelona. The explosion, which took place days before the deadly attack in Barcelona, reportedly killed the Imam who is thought to have inspired the terror cell. According to reports, the authorities have accused him of recruiting and radicalising the other attackers.
The cleric, who preached at a local mosque, once served a jail sentence for drug trafficking. He is also know to have been in contact with a terror suspect before but was never himself charged with terror-related incidents.
Spanish authorities have said the terror cell believed to be responsible for the attack had been "completely dismantled”. However, security forces have conducted overnight raids at homes in Ripoll, where eight of the 12 suspects lived.
