Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ Tech Is Set To Change The Retail Industry. Here’s How.

BySwarajya Staff

Amazon has unveiled a new kind of retail store, one that allows customers to fill up their shopping carts and walk out. The store, which has been named ‘Amazon Go’, has been described as a "checkout-free shopping experience made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning" on the company’s website.

The store functions without a cashier and uses a system of cameras, sensors or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers to identify the customers and, in turn, bill them on their Amazon accounts. The system has the ability to identify the entry of a customer into the store, the items picked and the exit. The customer, rather than having to stop and check out, will be allowed to exit the retail location.

"Our Just Walk Out technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you're done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we'll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt”, the shopping giant said in a statement.

According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, this store is just one among the many brick-and-mortar hassle-free shopping concepts that the company is testing at various locations in Seattle. This plan is part of Amazon’s effort to deliver orders as quickly as possible.
