In a close shave for Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the Amethi returning officer on Monday (22 April) declared his nomination papers valid amidst objections from an independent candidate over his (Rahul Gandhi) alleged British citizenship, ANI has reported.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi lawyer who had sought time to reply to the election officials claimed that the Congress president never took the citizenship of any other country and holds an Indian passport apart from filing Income Tax returns in India.
He also expressed ignorance over the pseudonym Raul Vinci which the Congress president is allegedly said to have used while studying in Cambridge.
It was earlier reported that an independent candidate contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency named Dhruv Lal has alleged that the Congress President Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship and has disparity in his affidavit filed with the Election Commission.
The candidate’s lawyer Ravi Prakash has alleged that during a company’s registration in the UK, Rahul Gandhi declared himself a British citizen.
If the charges against Rahul Gandhi were proven, he was liable to be debarred from contesting the Lok Sabha polls owing to being a non-citizen of India.
