Bengal Man Out To Buy Milk Dies After Being Beaten Up By Cops, Police Claim Heart Attack

BySwarajya Staff

A 32-year-old man died after being allegedly beaten up by police in Howrah for violating the lockdown Wednesday evening (26 March).

The man’s wife told a Bengali TV news channel that he had stepped out of his house to buy milk. A crowd had formed outside the milk booth and police allegedly resorted to a brutal lathicharge to disperse the gathering.

The man, identified as Lal Swami, sustained many blows and was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.

The police, however, refuted the family version. Deputy Commissioner of Howrah Police Raju Mukherjee told the media that the man was suffering from heart ailments and died of heart failure. He also denied that the police lathicharged any gathering.

But the Opposition has condemned the police action. The BJP has demanded a judicial enquiry into the death, immediate suspension of the policemen who beat up the man and a hefty compesation to the bereaved family.
