Bengaluru Surpasses Silicon Valley To Be The Most Dynamic City In The World, Hyderabad At Five

BySwarajya Staff

Global real estate services firm JLL has released its list of most dynamic cities in the world as part of their City Momentum Index 2017. Many of the cities that appear on the list would perhaps surprise a lot of people. But for India, and for residents of India’s Silicon Valley in particular, it is acche din.

Bengaluru has topped the global list as the most dynamic city, according to the global index, surpassing cities like Silicon Valley (US), Shanghai (China) and London (UK). Another Indian city, Hyderabad, also broke into the top ten list, coming fifth. Here is the top-ten global list.

World Economic Forum

The two Indian cities on the list, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, have one key feature in common -- both have embraced technology in a significant way. And that seems to have been the decisive factor in the cities’ ranking, as well as its ability to adapt and evolve.

JLL Research Director Jeremy Kelly wrote about the ranking for the World Economic Forum, where he said,

...these cities are now becoming more tightly networked and most are outperforming their national economies. Whether new regional technology hubs such as Nairobi, established global gateways like London, or emerging global cities like Shanghai, these cities integrate change and technology into their DNA.

Other key factors have included environment and housing. Kelly wrote that livability was an “important driver of momentum, as it is key to attracting talent”. Delhi reportedly lost out because it fared poorly in the environment sphere. It took the twenty-third place.

How the global surge in populism and nationalism impacts these cities, Kelly notes, will be something to watch out for. Indeed!
