Bengaluru’s Pet Lovers Will Have To Get Their Dogs Licensed, Rules BBMP

Come June, all dog owners in Bengaluru will have to get their pets licensed from the BBMP. The government has sanctioned the BBMP’s petition to make licensing of pet dogs mandatory. The animal husbandry department had submitted the petition to the BBMP commissioner. And as reported by Vijayavani, once this has been enforced it will be mandatory for everyone who owns a dog to obtain a license. The BBMP will soon provide options to obtain the license online.

“The BBMP's proposal to obtain a license for dog breeding has been approved by the government. It is imperative to obtain a license for puppies from the law enforcement. If a license is not obtained, a penalty will be imposed,” said the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Division Dr G Anand, as quoted.

In order to identify the dogs, GPS based caller ID will be incorporated at the time of licensing. This will enable the BBMP to know the name, age, breed, owner’s details and vaccination information of the dogs. The license will have to be renewed annually.

A fee of Rs 110 will have to be paid to obtain the license. A fine of Rs 1000 will be charged if a dog is found without a valid license and failure to remit the same will result in the confiscation of the canine. Such dogs if not re-claimed by owners within 72 days will then be handed over to the BBMP.

Also, dog breeders will be permitted to breed upto ten dogs. Also, breeding cannot be undertaken in the old 100 wards of Bengaluru. Once enforced, the BBMP will visit houses that own dogs to check for their licenses.

People living in independent houses will be permitted to keep three dogs, while those in apartments can own just one.

The BBMP will also undertake work to curb the menace of street dogs in the city. In this process if pet dogs are caught by the BBMP, the owners will be required to furbish the license. This will also help in dealing with cases of missing and stolen dogs which has been on the rise recently.
