Another ‘Make In India’ Success: BHEL Hits Bull’s Eye In Diversification, Rolls Out First 6000HP Locomotive

BySwarajya Staff

State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) rolled out a 6000HP electric locomotive from its Jhansi plant for the first time. The move is significant as the engineering major seeks to access a greater chunk of the transportation market and also diversify its product offerings.

A company statement released on the occasion stated that “As part of its diversification initiatives, BHEL has flagged off of its first 6000HP electric locomotive (Type WAG-9H)“. It may be noted that the Indian Railways has placed an order for 30 such locomotives and the engine flagged off on Monday is part of the same order.

As part of its efforts to gain a bigger market share in the transportation market, BHEL has established research and development centres at its Bangalore, Jhansi and Bhopal plants. Currently, the state-run engineering major enjoys over 50 per cent share in electrical propulsion equipment for railways’ rolling stock.
