US President Donald Trump on 15 February declared a national emergency to bypass Congress and fulfill the long-pending demand of building a wall along the border with Mexico, reports ANI.

Trump reportedly said that he had no choice but to choose emergency powers to stop illegal immigrants from spreading crime and drugs.

“I am going to sign a national emergency. It is a great thing to do because we have an invasion of drugs, invasion of gangs, invasion of people,” The Hill quoted Trump as saying in the press conference.

Trump said his decision would eventually prevail, acknowledging that his move would be challenged legally.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, top Democrats in the Congress, criticised the US President for his decision and said that they would look for every possible remedy to revoke the unlawful emergency.

“ The President’s unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence of our constitution and makes American less safe. The President is not above the law. Congress cannot let the President shred the Constitution,” they said in a joint statement.

The White House has reportedly confirmed that Trump signed a border security legislation into law approved by Congress. that funds roughly a quarter of government and thereby, preventing a new partial shutdown that was set to begin on Saturday (16 February).
