India bagged its third gold medal at the ongoing Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games thanks to the heroics of 16-year-old shooter Saurabh Chaudhary in the men’s 10-metre air pistol category. He also set the games record by bagging a score of 240.7.
As reported by Press Trust of India, this tournament was the first senior appearance for Chaudhary who beat 2010 World Champion and Japanese shooter Tomoyuki Matsuda in the 24 shot final.
The event added further joy to the Indian contingent after Abhishek Verma bagged the bronze. Verma who made his international debut notched a score of 219.3.
Chaudhary, a son of a farmer, hails from Kalina Village near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Currently a high school student, he learned his craft at Amit Sheoran’s academy near Baghpat.
Following his victory, he said that he did not feel any pressure. After the games, he would be off to compete in the World Championships.
India has also tasted success in another shooting event after Sanjeev Rajput won the Silver in 50 metres 3 Positions event. With this win, India increased its medal tally to 8 by winning three golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.
