To check the growth of novel-coronavirus in the country, the Italian government is planning to quarantine the entire Lombardy region around Milan as well as areas around and including Venice and the northern cities of Parma and Rimini, reports Economics Times.
The measures have been taken as the nation has recorded 233 deaths and 5,883 infections in the past two weeks. The Italians nation has recorded the most deaths of any country outside China and the third-most COVID-19 infections after China and South Korea.
As per Italian media sources, the government has also come up with a draft resolution which said that movement into and out of the regions would be severely restricted until 3 April.
Earlier, Italy had quarantined 11 villages in the Lombardy region with a combined population of 50,000 people and parts of the area around Venice.
The new measure would affect entire Lombardy region which is home to 10 million people. However, it is yet not clear when the plan will be implemented.
Additionally, the restriction on Milan, the financial capital of Italy, and Venice, a famous tourist spot, could deliver a crippling blow to the nation’s economy.
