Curb Your Enthusiasm: Supreme Court Stays Meghalaya HC’s Order To Start Commercial Operation In Umroi Airport

BySwarajya Staff

A bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, SK Kaul and K M Joseph of Supreme Court stayed the Meghalaya High Court order that directed commercial airlines companies to start flight operations in Umroi airport, reports PTI.

The bench went through the submissions of senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who represented Indigo airlines which stated that there were no firefighting and other facilities available at Umroi airport and therefore, flight operations cannot be started immediately.

On Wednesday, the supreme court agreed to give an urgent hearing to the plea of private airlines and heard it the next day. The plea challenged the high court order which directed to start flight operations form the Umroi Airport, which is 30 km away from Shillong.

The high court last week took up the matter and requested the Director General of Civil Aviation, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airport Authority of India (AAI) Chairman to look into the issue of making the airport operational.
