DMK Gets Back What It Gives, #GoBackStalin Trends On Twitter

BySwarajya Staff

The Dravida Munnetra Kazahagam (DMK) had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to go back when he visited Chennai on 12 April and orchestrated a similar campaign against Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) President Amit Shah last week. However, the Dravidian party is now facing a similar campaign on Twitter as its working president M K Stalin is scheduled to return to Chennai after a private visit to London.

Stalin had left for London last week and pictures of him watching the Wimbledon Championships along with his wife were splashed all over social media last week. The DMK leader said he had gone to Wimbledon on the invitation of former Indian Davis Cup star Vijay Amritraj.

Tongue-in-cheek tweets by Twitterati started filling up the Tamil social media space during Stalin’s absence. A tweet read that during Stalin’s absence from Chennai, dams in Tamil Nadu were filling up fast. Another said people in Tamil Nadu were having peace of mind in his absence.

On 12 April, the DMK was among the parties that asked Modi to go back when he visited Chennai to inaugurate the Defence Expo. They were demanding that the Centre submit its proposal for a Cauvery Water Board in the Supreme Court, instead of seeking time till elections got over in Karnataka on 15 May.

Since then, the Centre has submitted its proposal and appointed persons to run it, while the Karnataka Government is yet to nominate its representatives to the board. DMK and other Opposition parties which welcomed H D Kumaraswamy’s swearing in as Karnataka Chief Minister have kept quiet.
