Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Assam, Ripun Bora has submitted a resolution in the upper house of the Parliament calling for the national anthem to be revised.
Bora has moved a private member’s resolution in the Rajya Sabha advocating a change in the national anthem to incorporate the Northeast India into the anthem.
Jana Gana Mana was penned by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1911 many years before independence and was adopted as the Indian national anthem on 24 January 1950.
The resolution submitted by Bora also states that the then President Rajendra Prasad had said that an amendment in the national anthem is possible if the need arises and the government authorises it.
Bora has advocated replacing the word ‘Sindh’ with ‘Northeast India’ in his resolution.
