Duty Free Stores At Dubai’s Airports Start Accepting Payments In Indian Rupee

BySwarajya Staff

In welcome news for Indian shoppers who travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to buy consumer goods, duty free stores at all terminals of Dubai’s airports have begun to accept the Indian rupee in payments, reports LiveMint.

Shoppers from India are known to frequent Dubai for the substantially cheaper products at the duty free stores of Dubai International Airort and Al Maktoum Airport. High-end electronic goods are especially sought after.

The new move will make their shopping more convenient and even cheaper since they would not be losing money during currency conversion.

In total, payments at the Dubai Duty-Free can now be made in a total of 16 currencies. Currently, most goods are purchased either in the Dhiram, Euro or Dollar.

It is quite clear what motivates such a move on part of the UAE; Indian travelers make up some 12.2 million of the 90 million passengers who went through the two airports at Dubai last year, and thus the purchasing power of this large group certainly needs to be catered to.
