Elections In Jammu And Kashmir To Be Held Only After Delimitation: BJP Working President JP Nadda

The elections in the newly formed union territory (UT) Jammu and Kashmir will only be conducted after the delimitation of seats, suggests Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) working president JP Nadda.

As per a report in Hindustan Times, he said, “Jammu and Kashmir has been given the status of a Union Territory but it will also have a legislature. Elections will be held. But before that there will be delimitation of constituencies.’’

Nadda also said seats will also be reserved for Scheduled Tribes such as Gujjars and Bakarwals which as often considered among the oppressed communities in the region.

After the central government ended the special status of J&K and split it into two UTs, the Election Commission discussed the process of delimitation in the UT. The meeting took place after the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisational Bill last month.

Currently, there are 107 assembly seats in the erstwhile state which are now expected to increase to 114 in J&K that will have a legislature.

He also called Article 370 a mistake committed by the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
