In a bid to boost such vehicles in the country, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday said that the government has decided to exempt electric vehicles (EVs) and automobiles run on alternative fuel from permit requirements, reports Business Standard.
"We have decided to exempt EVs and all vehicles including autorickshaws, buses, taxis run on alternative fuel like ethanol, bio-diesel, CNG, methanol and bio-fuel, from permit requirements.” he said while speaking at the 58th annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).
Gadkari also said the ministry has done away with the requirement of local testing for initially bringing EVs into India for sale.
His statement comes amid government's efforts to promote eco-friendly vehicles through Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME) India scheme, which was launched in 2015.
