Reliance Jio has notched another milestone, this time having been recognised as the top global company in Fortune magazine’s ‘Change the World’ list.
The list is essentially a recognition of companies that have achieved a positive social impact through their activities where such activities constitute a part of their global business strategy. The company has beaten established multinational giants like Alibaba and ABB to occupy the numero uno position.
The magazine in a glowing comment has stated that “If access to the Internet is a basic human right – and the United Nations declared it one in the summer of 2016 – then Reliance Jio deserves more credit than most for expanding access to it”.
It would be worthwhile to note that Reliance Jio caused an unprecedented churn in the Indian telecom markets by providing free calls and data. Further offerings from the company include an ultra-cheap smartphone and plans are in the pipeline for a similar disruption in the fixed broadband space as well.
It has been contended that the biggest beneficiaries of Reliance Jio’s offerings are the rural populace and those with modest means as they are able to better participate in the economic life of the nation.
