Fledgling Hydro-Electric Power Of Telangana: BHEL Fully Commissions 120 MW Pulichintala Power Plant

On Monday (12 November), BHEL (Bharath Heavy Electrics Limited), the state-owned engineering giant announced that completion of the fourth 30 Mega Watt (MW) unit, it has wholly commissioned the 120 MW Pulichintala Hydro-Electric Project (HEP) in Telangana. The previous three units have been operating successfully, as reported by Press Trust of India.

The greenfield project was set up for the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TSGENCO) on River Krishna, the statement read. The Pulichintala HEP will contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by its power generation.

BHEL was assigned to execute the Electro-Mechanical (E&M) package which comprised of the supply and supervision of the erection & commissioning of four sets of Vertical Kaplan Turbines and Generators. Each turbine has 30 MW capacity, with which BHEL has to install the associated auxiliary equipment.

The project’s equipment has been manufactured and supplied by the units at Bhopal, Jhansi, Rudrapur and Bengaluru. The erection & commissioning on site has been done under the company's Southern Region construction division.

BHEL has commissioned 1,073 MW of hydro projects in Telangana so far. Apart from these, it has also commissioned seven Lift Irrigation Schemes (LIS) of various ratings aggregating to 521 MW, comprising 25 Pump-Motor sets. At present it is executing another 40 Pump-Motor sets of 5,356 MW, including Palamuru Rangareddy LIS Stage - 2 & 3 of 2,610 MW (2 stages of 9x145 MW each), in the state.
