Former Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi Writes To PM Modi On Flood And Landslide Situation In His Constituency Wayanad

BySwarajya Staff

Former Congress president and incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) from Kerala’s Wayanad Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday (13 August) wrote to Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi for assistance in tackling the flood situation in his constituency, reports Indian Express.

In the letter to PM Modi, Gandhi underscored that his constituency was home to 10 per cent of the biodiversity of the entire country and said that Wayanad was one of the most fragile parts of the Western Ghats.

Gandhi has suggested an action plan through a special package to support the life and livelihood of the people of Wayanad.

In his letter, Gandhi also highlighted that the declining forest cover in the region and depleting inflow of water through the streams and rivers could endanger farms and population in three states- Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The ex-Congress chief suggested that PM Modi may consider two measures to deal with the flood situation in the state in future: “First, many lives can be saved if early warning systems are installed to alert populations in vulnerable areas and specially-designed landslide/flood shelters and communication facilities are provided in such places. Second, developing a long-term strategy and an action plan supported through a special package of assistance to protect both life and livelihoods of people to be taken in priority.”
