Former RSS Pracharak Trivendra Singh Rawat To Be Uttarakhand Chief Minister

Trivendra Singh Rawat was today (17 March) elected as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party leader in Uttarakhand. He is set to take oath as the state’s eighth Chief Minister tomorrow, reported ANI, succeeding Congress leader Harish Rawat.

Shyam Jaju, in charge of the BJP in the state, has said that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah, and other senior leaders, will be present at the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow.

Meanwhile Rawat has already met with the state’s Governor K K Paul claiming the support of 57 members of the 70-member Legislative Assembly.

According to an Indian Express report, Rawat was with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from 1983 to 2002. He was agriculture minister in Uttarakhand from 2007 to 2012. Elected this year for the third time from the Doiwala assembly seat in the state, the ex-RSS pracharak is also in charge of the BJP’s Jharkhand unit. He is reported to have close ties with Shah.
