Ahead of Delhi’s assembly elections in 2020, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that those whose electricity consumption did not exceed 200 units will not have to pay anything in their power bills, reports PTI.
"Those consuming up to 200 units of electricity in Delhi will not need to pay their power bills. There will be no electricity charges for them," Kejriwal stated.
Apart from fully subsidising electricity consumption till 200 units, the national capital territory (NCT) government would also pay 50 per cent of the power bills of those whose consumption stood between 201 and 400 units.
Countering possible attacks from political opponents for enacting populist measures ahead of polls, Kejriwal claimed that free electricity was also distributed to “big leaders and officers”.
"I just want to give the same benefits to my 'aam aadmi' (the common man) who works for 24 hours," he remarked.
As per Kejriwal, the electricity subsidy will add between Rs 1,800-2,000 crore in annual expenses for his government.
