Government employees are often considered a big obstacle to good governance in India. That's the reason why citizens often call for linking the benefits showered on the government employees to their performance. But the governments hardly find the political capital or will to spend on such basic administrative reforms.
The Union government, yesterday, took an important step in this direction. The Cabinet gave its approval to pay productivity-linked bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages to eligible non-gazetted railway employees (excluding Railway Protection Force/ Railway Protection Special Force personnel) for the financial year 2015-16.
For this purpose, a sum of Rs 2,091 crore has been allocated.
This initiative is a welcome step and can result in motivating a large number of railway employees to improve the performance of the Indian Railways and enhance the productivity levels.
The government is looking to deliver payment of this bonus to eligible employees before Diwali holidays. It will be a truly colourful festival for the hardworking staff.
