Government Likely To Introduce Bill In Parliament’s Winter Session To End Triple Talaq

In the wake of Supreme Court’s August 22 ruling deeming triple talaq “unconstitutional”, the government is all set to create a law to deem it an “offence”.
The government is reported to have constituted a ministerial committee to frame the law. Coming after the apex court’s directive, the move signals the government’s resolve towards a Uniform Civil Code.

Triple talaq has a been a matter of contention in India, even as it continues to be banned in most Islamic nations, including Pakistan and Bangladesh. The ruling by the Supreme Court was hence, welcomed by Muslim women and government alike.

The most recent occurrence of triple talaq, even after the ban, saw an Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor give an ‘instantaneous’ divorce to his wife over Whatsapp, following which she threatened to end her life.

With an increasing number of reports on the various ways the discriminatory practice was still in place, with no regulation governing it, the rights of Muslim women are continuously being violated even in this day and age. The winter session is scheduled to take place in December, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, which might now see a showdown over the bill.
