Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Haryana unit leader Suraj Pal Amu, who had reportedly offered a Rs 10 crore bounty for beheading "Padmavati" director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Deepika Padukone, resigned as the chief media coordinator on Wednesday, the Times of India has reported.
"With a heavy heart, I have resigned from the post I had in BJP. I am pained at the behaviour of Haryana CM. I have never seen a BJP CM so arrogant who doesn't respect workers and community representatives," Amu was quoted as saying.
Amu was booked by Gurgaon police for his remarks, and the BJP distanced itself from the comments and issued a show cause notice to him.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has said that any decision on the screening of the film in the state would be taken only after the Central Board of Film Certification takes a call on the film.
Amu later said he had made the remarks in his personal capacity and that he would resign if his party asked him to but would not tolerate any "insult" to his community.
Amid rumours of a romantic dream sequence between Rajput queen Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji's characters in the film, many Rajput groups have been up in arms against the movie, alleging that it distorts history.
