Here’s Why The Rush To Chandigarh To Get Fuel Tanks Filled May Soon Come To An End

Amid rising prices of fuels, the finance ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and officials of Chandigarh held a meeting on Tuesday (25 September) and agreed to fixed uniform tax rates on petroleum products. They also agreed to harmonise the registration of vehicles, liquor and transport permits, reported NDTV.

The meeting was held for a discussion on fixing a uniform rate of taxes on diesel and petrol due to high variation in the prices of petroleum products in these states. According to an official release, “It was agreed during the meeting to bring uniformity on the tax rates of petrol and diesel.”

It was decided in the meeting that a sub-committee will be constituted which will give its recommendation in next 15 days on how uniformity of taxes can be achieved.

Finance Minister of Haryana Captain Abhimanyu said that a decision was taken in the meeting to make an effort to bring uniformity in taxes on petrol and diesel so that consumers could get some relief from the high prices. He said that it was conceded in the meeting that as the tax rates will be made uniform across the participating states the diversion of the trade will go down.

Manpreet Singh Badal, Punjab’s Finance Minister, suggested that a uniform policy on state transport should be made in order to check the loss of revenue from registration and permit being done in states where there is lower tax.
