The planned high-speed Hyderabad metro rail line connecting the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad to either Raidurg or Mindspace junction would contain both elevated and underground sections, Metro Rail News reported.
The 31 KM “Airport Express Metro Corridor” would essentially be elevated but 2.5 KM of the total stretch will be underground and 1 KM would run along the surface.
The Hyderabad Airport Metro Rail (HAML) which will oversee the project is currently searching for an “innovative financing model” to make it financially viable. The government funded and owned project is currently awaiting the Centre’s nod for financial and technical bids. The project is expected to cost around Rs 5,000 crore.
As per a report in The Hindu, the Airport metro route would intersect the outer-ring-road on 16 points as a result of which the pillars would be shorter than usual, which will result in cost savings.
The metro is expected to take just 20 minutes to connect the airport to the main city. Bio-Diversity junction, Nanakramguda, Narsingi, TS Police Academy, Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, Airport Cargo station and terminal are expected to be a few of the stations.
