The Military Intelligence has foiled another major plot by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to gain the upper hand to extract sensitive information from security personnel posted at Jammu and Kashmir through a suspect who was based out of Hyderabad, reports Deccan Chronicle.

The man who hails from Nallakunta was apprehended by the Hyderabad police on Friday (28 December) after catching him running an illegal voice over internet protocol (VoIP) exchange that rerouted international calls into local calls to mask the callers’ numbers which were allegedly being used by the ISI.

The suspect has been identified as Dinesh Kumar. The police have also recovered a large number of illegally procured SIM cards and other devices used to run the VoIP exchange.

A report about a suspicious illegal VoIP exchange which was being run in Hyderabad was picked up by a Military Intelligence unit located in Jammu & Kashmir and was promptly relayed to the Telangana state police.

“The illegal VoIP was being used by Pakistan’s ISI. It was reported that Intelligence operatives were exploiting the facilities from Pakistan for making calls to security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir to acquire sensitive information from them while posing as senior officials,” said an official.

The exchanges enabled callers from other countries to call any Indian number while masking their identity. These VoIP enabled calls to travel all over the Internet, land in an illegal exchange and later get converted into regular telecom calls.
