IIT Kanpur To Open Up For Medical Aspirants As Institute Approves Medical College, Super Speciality Hospital

IIT Kanpur board has approved the setting up of a medical college and a super-speciality hospital in its campus as part of an initiative to look beyond technical education, Times of India has reported.

The total cost of this project is estimated at Rs 800 crore and construction would begin on a 20 acre plot near the institute's main campus after the approval by the HRD Ministry. The detailed project plan, currently being readied by the university would soon be sent to the ministry for approval.

The report claims that this push to provide medical education is part of the institute’s focus to emulate the pattern of international universities, which have different schools covering a variety of scholastic areas.

The medical college and super-speciality hospital is expected to strengthen the research in both medical and engineering fields as the institute already offers a course on biomedical engineering.
