IMA Writes To Amit Shah Seeking Law Against Violence On Medical Staff With Minimum Seven-Year Jail Term

Expressing solidarity with the doctors' agitation after a Muslim mob assaulted junior doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a four-day nationwide protest from Friday, reports Economic Times.

The apex body of doctors said the protest would continue across the weekend, marked by dharnas, marches by the medical professionals wearing black bands. IMA has called for a strike on 17 June, withdrawing non-essential health services including the OPDs for 24 hours, starting from 6 am on Monday. The emergency and casualty services would remain unaffected.

Taking stock of the barbaric attacks on the doctors at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the IMA has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding enactment of a special law with a nationwide jurisdiction to check violence against doctors and health care workers in hospitals.

IMA, in the letter, asked for a provision of a minimum of seven-year jail term with the reassuring levels on the lines of strong laws like the POCSO Act.
