In A Bid To Reduce Pollution, Government To Run Electric Buses In Collaboration With Private Players

BySwarajya Staff

NITI Aayog has sought comments from stakeholders on the proposal to run electric bus fleets in collaboration with private players, Economic Times has reported. The draft agreement on the proposed public-private partnership has been made public. The proposal came days after the Minister for Road Transport urged private players to participated in public transport.

“The objective is to provide operation and management efficiency of city bus fleet for the authority, while ensuring bankability of the project for the private sector,” the NITI Aayog said in its model concession agreement issued earlier in the month.

A stakeholder’s meeting will be held on 12 October to finalise the agreement. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Manali, Kolkata and Bengaluru have already introduced electric buses in their public transport bodies.

The think tank has said that India could save Rs 20 lakh crore in oil imports and one gigaton carbon emissions by shifting to a shared electric transport system.
