In A First, Chennai To Supply Treated Sewage Water For Industries, Thus Saving Drinking Water For Domestic Use

In a move that is likely to save millions of litres of drinking water, Chennai is set to become the first Indian city to supply recycled sewage water for industrial use, reports The New Indian Express.

A new sewage treatment plant is being built in Kodungaiyur area of the city which is expected to be completed this week. The water of the plant will be sent to the industry, thereby ensuring that fresh drinking water is reserved for residential use.

According to the report, the Metro Water Board officials said that the move will help the city in tackling the water crisis.

A second treatment plant, which is under construction in Koyambedu, is likely to be operational by September. These two treatment plants will be able to treat 90 million litres of sewage per day (MLD) through the reverse osmosis process. The capacity of these two plants will be increased to 120 MLD by July 2020.

As per the report, generally the sewage water was released to the rivers in the city after secondary treatment. However, in the coming days it will be sent to the treatment plants for a third level of treatment, which will make the water fit enough for industrial usage.
