Indian Media Under SC Scanner Over Alleged Role In Influencing AgustaWestland Deal

The Supreme Court today (3 January) agreed to hear a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) that seeks a court-monitored probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation/Special Investigation Team into the allegation that AgustaWestland had spent six million euros for “managing” the media in the VVIP chopper deal.

The petitioner is Hari Jaising, former editor of Punjab-based newspaper The Tribune. He has been asked by the SC bench to provide a copy of the petition to the CBI and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED).

The petitioner-journalist has sought a report on the alleged role of the media in influencing the deal by way of their reports. There are allegations that certain media persons, including some prominent ones, were beneficiaries of the "media management" by AgustaWestland.
