Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a PSU, has bagged the contract for the supply of metro cars for Mumbai Metro. The order includes manufacturing of 63 Metro trains with six cars each totalling to about 378 Metro cars for the Mumbai Metro Corridor 2A, 2B & 7, as reported by Metro Rail News.

BEML bid was the lowest among Alstom, Bombardier, CAF, CRRC, Titagarh and Hyundai Rotem. The price per coach stands less than Rs 8 Crore which includes spares, design, installation, and commissioning.

Some features include driver-less train compatibility, energy friendly regenerative brake system and a stainless steel body with four doors on each side.

Line 2A will connect Dahisar to DN Nagar in Mumbai. Line 2B will run further from DN Nagar to Mankhurd via Bandra, and line 7 runs from Dahisar to Andheri (east).

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has standardised the specifications for metro rolling-stock, signalling, telecom, electrical and civil components. MoHUA has also specified that a minimum of 75 per cent coaches procured against any tender has to be manufactured in India. Due to this move Alstom, Bombardier, BEML, and Titagarh have set up manufacturing units in India.
