Matters worsened for senior Congress leader P Chidambaram today evening (26 August) as a special CBI court extended his custody by four days to 30 August in the INX Media scam probe. He would next be produced before the court on 30 August.
Chidambaram, one of the main accused in the INX Media scam was arrested by the CBI on 21 August from his Delhi residence. He was produced before a CBI court the next day and sent to the investigative agency’s custody till 26 August.
Trouble began for Chidambaram on 20 August when the Delhi High Court rejected his protection from arrest plea in the case, following which he went incognito for almost 24 hours. He eventually surfaced at the Congress headquarters and was subsequently arrested.
Today he had suffered a setback when the Supreme Court dismissed his bail plea by calling it pointless as he had already been arrested by CBI in the matter.
