J&K Government May Ban Social Media In Kashmir To Clamp Down On Misinformation

BySwarajya Staff

Jammu and Kashmir government may ban the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms in Kashmir Valley, India Today has reported. A decision in this regard is expected to be taken soon.

"The decision to block social media will be taken soon. The government is, principally, of the view that social media has been creating volatile situation in Kashmir. To avoid the spread of rumours, fake news and develop a panicky situation that leads to violence, we are forced to take the decision," a government minister said.

"We are forced to decide as any action or medium that is deteriorating peace and security, and proving fatal for the people requires to be acted upon," he added.

Use of social media for instigating violence against security forces, through fake news and videos, has seen a rise in the Valley. Reports claim that even militants have taken to social media as the army easily cuts through other communication channels in use. The recent circulation of videos, among other things, has forced the government to rethink its position on the issue.
