As per the latest reports, Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar will be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will be sworn in by President Pranab Mukherjee on 4 January 2017.
Justice Khehar happens to the senior-most judge after the CJI and should succeed to the post on the principle of seniority. As Chief Justice, he will have a tenure of over seven months as he would be retiring on 28 August 2017.
Justice Khehar will be the forty-fourth CJI. He will be the first Sikh to occupy this critical role.
Chief Justice T S Thakur on Tuesday (6 December) wrote to the Union government recommending Justice Khehar's name for appointment.
