Tamil Superstar Kamal Haasan has come out in support of bull-taming sport, Jallikattu. He says he is a big fan of the sport and wants the tradition to resume.
The Supreme Court in 2014 had banned the practice of bull fight. Last year, it had junked Tamil Nadu government’s plea seeking a review of the 2014 verdict. The apex court maintains that the tradition of Jallikattu amounts to cruelty to the animals. However, the court has refused to extend the same logic to animal sacrifice during Bakrid festival.
Underscoring such hypocrisy surrounding the Jallikattu ban, Haasan commented that “If you want a ban on jallikattu, let's also ban biryani.” Haasan speaking to Rahul Kanwal at the India Today South Conclave in Chennai.
Haasan also cautioned against confusing Jallikattu, the bull taming sport, with bull-fighting in Spain. Unlike in Spain, he said, bulls are treated like god and as part of the family in Tamil Nadu. “It is about taming the bull and not creating physical harm by breaking its horns or other parts ,” India Today quoted Haasan saying.
