Upendra headed-Uttama Prajakeeya Party (UPP) has announced that it will be contesting in all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka, The Hindu reports.
The selection of the candidates has begun, and once selected the candidates will contest under the symbol of autorickshaw assigned to the party by the Election Commission (EC).
While addressing the media, the filmmaker and actor said that he did not contest in the 2018 polls due to differences with the Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janata Party (KJPP).
“After quitting KPJP, we launched UPP and got it registered. We have secured the symbol of the autorickshaw, which suits our working-class agenda. We are all set to contest in the Lok Sabha polls,” Upendra said.
Upendra, when asked whether he would contest in the upcoming polls, said that he is one of the candidates for the ticket, but will need to pass through the selection process like everybody else and only if he passes, he will choose a constituency to contest polls from.
“A list of candidates will be announced in 15 to 20 days. Over 20 people have already approached the party, and their applications are being processed,” he said.
The actor said that the party’s agenda is to propagate Prajakeeya (of the people, for the people, by the people) rather the Rajakeeya (politics). He further said that UPP would only accept manifestos that are realistic.
Upendra says that the party has instilled a five-point programme to solidify people’s commitment to democratic principles- Selection, Election, Correction, Rejection, Promotion.
Speaking about the purpose of the party, Upendra said, “We want a regional party that does not compromise when it comes to issues concerning the region. We launched UPP just for that purpose.”
