Kodagu Begins To Recover From Flood Devastation After Rains Reduce But Recovery A Long Way Away

BySwarajya Staff

Life in the western ghats of Karnataka has begun to slowly head towards normalcy as the fury of the rains has now reduced. As reported by TV9, the reduction in water collected on roads has made way for the army to clear the debris and mud which piled upon the roads owing to the floods and resulting landslides.

But, nature's fury has left the land of the Kaveri completely devastated. People who could return to their homes have been seen trying to pick bits and pieces of their lives which have been thrown completely out of gear by the relentless monsoon.

Fields destroyed, roads damaged beyond repair, and in some places, entire villages are believed to have disappeared. But with the relentless rains having taken a break, the coffee town is heaving a sigh of relief.

As reported by Vijayavani, the losses resulting from the founds have been estimated as amounting to over Rs 10,000 crore, as per initial estimates. While eight lives have been said to be lost, around 845 houses have been damaged in Kodagu alone.

The Shiradi ghat stretch which connects the coast with Bengaluru via Sakleshpur has been closed for traffic since 15 August and will continue to stay shut say authorities as landslides have been hampering restoration work.

As reported by Deccan Chronicle, no vehicles would be allowed on the Shiradi Ghat stretch till the restoration work is completed.
