Mint has reported that Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) has won the contract to construct the first phase of Terminal-2 at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. L&T also constructed the first two runways at the airport. Signing an agreement with Kempegowda International Airport Limited (KIAL), the company has taken up the task of completing the first phase by March 2021.
The capacity of the airport after the completion of Terminal 2 will increase to 4.5 crore annually. That is double the current numbers. It is hinted that the contract might be worth Rs 3,000 crore. This number however, isn’t verified.
Bengaluru’s airport is one of the fastest growing in India and has displayed a steady rise in passenger capacity. It was opened for operations in 2008. In April, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) informed that it served around 2.7 crore passengers in 2017-18. In the same year, the airport saw around 1,97,330 air traffic movements with a growth of 10.8 per cent. Cargo has grown by 9.1 per cent so far.
Kempegowda International Airport hosts 44 airlines that connect the city with 46 domestic and 21 international destinations.
