Maharashtra Civic Polls: BJP Under Fadnavis Takes Congress Stronghold Latur

BySwarajya Staff

Extending its winning streak, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has won the Latur Municipal Corporation election handsomely.

Latur has predominantly been a Congress stronghold, electing former home minister Shivraj Patil for seven consecutive terms and playing home turf for former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Voting for 201 seats in the Latur, Chandrapur and Parbhani Municipal Corporations was held on Wednesday (19 April). The BJP defeated the incumbent Congress in Latur and retained Chandrapur, and the incumbent Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) lost Parbhani to the Congress.

Of the 70 seats in Latur, the BJP won 40, wresting control of the civic body from Amit Deshmukh, son of the late chief minister. It won 32 of the 66 seats in Chandrapur.

Fadnavis took to Twitter to congratulate the party workers.
