Hindu spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi has been felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Secretary General of United Nations António Guterres for her contributions to Swachh Bharat campaign during the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention reports New Indian Express.
She was honoured for contributing Rs 100 crore - the largest contribution to the Swachh Bharat Kosh since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Campaign four years ago.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the Mata Amritanandamayi Math’s unwavering contributions to cleanliness and environmental protection.
“Amma (as Mata Amrithanandamayi is known), has taken the Swachh Bharat campaign on her own shoulders. The campaign has gained immense strength and has transformed from a campaign into a mass movement, inspired by various great humanitarian leaders like Amma”said the Prime Minister.
Amma had presented the Math’s cheque for Rs 100 crore to Arun Jaitley in 2015 which was used to build toilets for the people along the banks of the Ganges.
Apart from the donation, the Math has also constructed 12,000 toilets for the poor in Kerala and has an ongoing programme on skill development where women are trained in plumbing and masonry.
