BySwarajya Staff

The Meerut Municipal Corporation prohibited seven of its member from attending a meeting after they refused to sing Vande Mataram. The corporators who refused to sing the national song are from the Samajwadi Party.

The meeting of the corporation had started with Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia asking all the members to stand up and sing the national song. Seven members, belonging to a minority community, refused to sing.

Soon after, these members walked out. This triggered a massive protest and the BJP councillors started raising the slogans. “Hindustan me rehna hai to Vande Mataram kehna hoga,” the said.

The corporators returned to the meeting after a brief while but Ahluwalia refused to let them participate in the meeting.

“We have almost 90 corporators, of whom 18 are Muslims. Only a handful of people have an issue with Vande Mataram; the rest (want to) sing it,” The Indian Express quoted the mayor as saying.

Ahluwalia also said that he had informed about the activities of these corporators to the Samajwadi Party government but no one took any action.
