The board of directors of the Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) have decided to rename the MEGA to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the Metro Rail News reports. The information was revealed by MEGA Chairman, Dr IP Gautam after the board meeting on Saturday (29 December 2018).
The renaming comes after the central government's notification which said each state need to have only one metro company, Gautam said. “This one will be a mother company, and then for other cities, there will be subsidiary companies operating. Same directors now will be handling for different projects like Phase 2 of the current project,” he adds.
After the name change, various metro projects in the city like Ahmedabad metro and Surat metro will come under GMRC. While the structure and stake will remain as it is, said Gautam, while adding that the new model has been successful in other parts on the country.
Besides Ahmedabad metro, the Gujarat government also plans to build a metro in Surat and Dholera, and all three upcoming metro projects would fall under one umbrella.
With the change, GMRC will be the third metro company in the country to handle all metro projects in its city. MEGA has requested for the name-change to the registrars of companies, and will be announcing the name in the next week, Gautam adds.
Gautam also said the name change would enable them to build onto the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar metro projects. “This is to ensure that the agency would be capable of executing Metro Rail projects in other cities of Gujarat. And, doesn’t remain confined to Metro Rail project in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,” he said.
