Meghalaya HC Judge Stands His Ground Post-‘Islamic Country’ Remark, Says He Has No Political Ambitions To Fulfill 

Recently, Justice S R Sen of Meghalaya High Court courted controversy after he wrote in a order that India shouldn’t turn into an Islamic country. Just a few days into the controversy, Sen has issued a clarification that his comments are in no way politically motivated and that his judgement has been deeply misinterpreted. He says that he has no political ambitions.

On Monday (10 December), he had said that the central government should introduce a law to allow non-Muslim communities from neighbouring countries to obtain Indian citizenship. He cited examples of Khasis from Pakistan and other tribal communities from Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

He had also mentioned that he is confident that PM Modi and CM Mamata Banerjee will do the required in national interest. He has clarified that secularism remains to be one of the most basic foundations of the Constitution. The Indian Express reported that he clarified saying there are many communities who are facing religious prosecution, and for some of them, they lack the adequate evidence to prove their origin, and that the government should look into the matter.
