More Than 500 Foreign Fighters Who Joined ISIS Convicted Since 2018: Iraqi Supreme Court

BySwarajya Staff

In the aftermath of the territorial defeat of the Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terrorist group, the Supreme Court of Iraq has announced that Iraqi courts have tried and sentenced over 500 foreigners who joined the Jihadist organisation since the start of 2018, reports The New Indian Express.

The court said that it has issued over 524 verdicts, while interrogations of 202 accused are going on and 44 cases are in the trial stage. Till now, 11 individuals have been acquitted.

The court has not released the list of the nationalities of those who are under trials. The interrogations range between six months to a year, based on the intensity of the connection between the accused and the outfit.

After declaring victory in its war over IS in 2017, Iraq is making sure that the organisation won’t surge back and is keeping a tight vigil on those who look like showing interest on joining the the extremist group.

Iraq has also tried thousands of its nationals who are repatriated back from the Syrian camps and sentenced at least four people to death last month. Iraq executed a total of 271 people last year.

Close to 1000 foreign fighters are in the detention camps in the Kurdish region of northeast Syria.
