Mosques For All? Kerala Based Organisation Plans To Moves SC For Muslim Women’s Fundamental Right To Practice Islam

Taking a cue from the controversial Supreme Court verdict allowed menstruating women to enter Sabarimala, women from a progressive Muslim organisation called NISA, has demanded the entry of women in Sunni Mosques reported News 18.

‘NISA’ is a Kerala based organisation known for fighting gender discrimination and malpractices prevalent in Muslim community such as polygamy, triple talaq, dowry, domestic violence, equal property rights and guardianship rights for the Muslim women.

VP Zuhara, the head of the organisation is reported to have said that they would file a petition in the Supreme Court demanding the restoration of freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate religion for all women, as stipulated in the constitution.

Even though women are allowed to enter mosques, including the Jama Masjid in Delhi, they are not permitted to sit in the same congregation along with men to offer prayers. Women have been designated a separate space with certain restrictions on praying after evening (Maghrib).

The Bombay High Court in 2016 had allowed entry of women into the Haji Ali Dargah’s inner sanctum sanctorum.
