BySwarajya Staff

Construction of the first line connecting Delhi and Meerut as part of the National Capital Region’s (NCR) Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will start by July, according to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), reports PTI. Once complete, the RRTS would reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to one hour from the current three hours.

Eight corridors have been planned as part of the RRTS with Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut, Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat being constructed in the first phase.

The Meerut-bound line will begin at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi which currently houses the Hazrat Nizammuddin railway station and Sarai Kale Khan Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). It will then proceed to enter Uttar Pradesh, where it will have halts in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Murad Nagar and Modinagar, before terminating at Modipuram in Meerut.

According to an official of the NCRTC, the corridor is expected to have a ridership of 7.95 lakh by 2024.
